The role of Empowerment in determining sustainable development (Case study: Higher education students in University of Tehran)

Abstract

Sustainable development is a complicated and multi-dimension mainstream containing economic, political, social and environmental aspects, interacting each others. Various factors can play significant role in the sustainable development process and facilitate as well as accelerate the development achievement. It is believed that society empowerment is a major factor in the sustainable development. This study aims to evaluate and analyze the influence of empowerment on the process of sustainable development. This study is survey in terms of strategy, mono-method in terms of method, and descriptive in terms of approach. Operational model was originated from a comprehensive lieterature review. Data was collected through a questionnaire and analyzed by correlation analysis and structural equation modeling, using SPSS 22 and LISREL 8.54. Statistical population was higher education students in the University of Tehran. To collect data, stratified sampling was employed to survey 450 higher education students. According to the results of path analysis, it was revealed that society empowerment can accelerate sustainable development.
