Abstract

The present study aimed to comparision parenting styles and shyness of athlete and non-athlete female students in the first grade of Sarab city. Parenting styles reflect how parents interact with children, and shyness in the sense of being uncomfortable in the community. The research method is causal-comparative research. The statistical population of the study consisted of all female high school students in the first period of Sarab city (N=1134). After identifying 68 qualified athletes, the same number of non-athletes were selected by simple sampling. The Bramind parenting styles (1991) and Stanford Shyness Questionnaires (SSI) were used for data collection. Cronbach's alpha coefficient values were 0.72 for shyness questionnaire and 0.67, 0.71 and 0.72 for Permissive, authoritarian and authoritative, respectively. The data were analyzed by MANOVA (Multivariable Analyze of Variance). The results showed that there was a significant difference between the two groups in level of shyness and authoritarian and authoritative style; so that the athlete's score was lower in the authoritarian manner and level of shyness than non-athletes; but more in the authoritative manner. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the Permissive manner.
