Typology of energy consumption styles among households in Mashhad

Abstract

Household energy consumption is considered as one of the causes of environmental pollution. Of course, energy consumption varies in different ways and styles, and these different consumption patterns depend on different factors. Much research has been done in the field of energy consumption, which is generally conducted researches in this field have used deductive strategies and quantitative methods, while energy consumption behavior styles are diverse and complex at the same time. Accordingly, the present study was conducted to identify the mental meaning of individuals and the mental reasons of individuals to adopt different styles of saving or consumerism. The main purpose of this research is to identify different types of energy consumption (gas and electricity) among Mashhad families in 2020. To achieve this purpose, qualitative method was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 27 of families in Mashhad city. The results showed that individuals were in a range of different species from economist to consumerist.
The results also showed that individuals (interviewed cases) were categorizes (based on the three components of consumerist, awareness, altruistic) such as 4 committed savings, 4 passive savings, 8 inevitable savings, 2 ritual consumerism, 2 unbalanced consumerisms, 2 imitation consumerism, 2 particularism consumerism and 2 persons conspicuous consumerism. So, the other results also showed that the three components such as consciousness, generalize and economic behavior caused variation in energy consumption behavior of individuals.
