Gray divorce among couples aged 50 years and older has increased worldwide and in Iran over the past two decades. Because this phenomenon occurs on the threshold of old age, it carries profound consequences, as opportunities for economic and emotional recovery are more limited. This study employed a qualitative approach and a scoping review methodology to examine the underlying factors and consequences of gray divorce in international and Iranian literature. Following a systematic search of five national and four international databases, 33 articles were selected for final analysis and coded using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis method. The findings revealed that the underlying factors of gray divorce can be categorized into six themes: socio-cultural factors, developmental transitions, marital dynamics, economic factors, agency and gender, and structural factors. The consequences were grouped into four main themes: social and familial outcomes, economic consequences with an emphasis on gender inequality, psychological and health-related outcomes, and positive outcomes and adaptation. Gender inequality emerged as the most salient characteristic of gray divorce; older women experience economic vulnerability, whereas older men are more likely to face loneliness. A research gap remains in the Iranian context, highlighting the need for indigenous and context-specific studies on this phenomenon.
